A year and a half after police and intelligence officers in Germany uncovered a plot to overthrow the country’s government and replace its chancellor, the first of three trials in the sprawling case is set to begin on Monday in Stuttgart. Most of the would-be insurrectionists were arrested in December 2022, when heavily armed German police officers stormed houses, apartments, offices and a remote royal hunting lodge and made dozens of arrests. Those charged included a dentist, a clairvoyant, an amateur pilot and a man running a large QAnon telegram group. The German authorities contend that their figurehead was Heinrich XIII Prince of Reuss, an obscure and conspiracy-minded aristocrat who would have been made chancellor if the coup had succeeded.

I always struggle to explain Eid al-Adha. I explain that the holiday commemorates how willing a prophet was to sacrifice anything for God — including his own son. This makes Eid al-Adha difficult to plan for. Depending on where you live, Eid al-Adha celebrations could involve slaughtering a goat, making a donation to charity or attending morning prayers. Celebrating Eid whenever it comes, whether the timing is convenient or not, is a small refusal to be governed — by our workplaces, of course, but also by all the systems that regulate us.

Canfranc Estación, the Royal Hideaway Hotel, reopened its doors after 50 years of decay. Manolo YlleraCanfranc Estación, located in the Pyrenees mountains in Aragon, Spain, was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1928 with French President Gaston Doumergue in attendance. Passengers could travel via Zaragoza and Madrid in Spain to Lisbon, Portugal as well as France. However, the travel options were not available for long as Franco closed the border in 1936 and ordered the rail tunnel to be shuttered, per the Financial Times. It reopened five years later but the line was not well used and a derailment on the French side closed it permanently.
